KOSIT Hair Designs has worked on Peckham High Street for over three decades — with every type of hair, and a depth of Afro hair expertise that leaves very little in textured hair unfamiliar.
Our story
A salon that stayed in one place, and built its expertise there.
KOSIT opened in 1989. Peckham has changed a great deal since; the work inside the salon has changed far less.
Afro hair care was — and to a large extent still is — a discipline learned by doing it. Curl pattern, density, porosity and shrinkage vary enormously between two people who walk in asking for the same style, and the right answer for one is often wrong for the other. Recognising that quickly, and adjusting, is a skill that takes years rather than courses.
Over that time the salon built a reputation the ordinary way: by not damaging people’s hair, by being honest when a style was a bad idea, and by being there the following year to see how it had grown. Clients who came in the nineties still come now. A number of them bring their children.
The work has been recognised along the way: Applekosit has won the Black Beauty & Hair / Wahl colourist award three times, and bridal awards in 2009 and 2012. What matters more to the people in the chair is that the hair leaving the salon is in better condition than the hair that arrived.

KOSIT opens in Peckham
The salon opens on Peckham High Street, with Afro hair as its expertise from the first day.

Awards for the work

Applekosit has worked with Afro hair for over 35 years, has led KOSIT since it opened, and has won awards for both colour and bridal work.
What that experience buys a client is mostly judgement. Knowing how far a particular head of hair can be taken today, and what it will cost next month. Seeing tension damage before it becomes visible. Telling the difference between hair that is dry and hair that is damaged — problems that look similar and need opposite treatment.
It also shows in restraint. A great deal of the skill is in doing less: leaving weight where it holds a shape, cutting only what has to go, and refusing work that would look good for a week.

- A style built on compromised hair fails, and takes the hair with it. Scalp, tension and moisture are assessed before anything is agreed.
- Honest advice
- If a style will damage your hair, we say so and explain why. You are told what your hair actually needs, and the decision stays yours.

- We welcome all hair types. Afro hair is a discipline in its own right, and over three decades of specialising in it is how the judgement is built.

- We would rather do less today and keep your hair growing than deliver something that photographs well and costs you length.
