Cutting & Shaping

Cutting textured hair is a different discipline. Curl draws the hair up, so where the scissors go and where the length lands are two different things — and knowing the difference is the whole job.

About cutting & shaping

A cut at KOSIT is planned around how your hair behaves when it is left alone. We look at shrinkage, at where the curl clusters and where it separates, and at how the shape will move as it grows. The aim is a shape that holds for weeks, not one that only looks right on the day.

That covers everything from a clean, close shape to layered work on longer natural hair, reshaping after a protective style, or taking damaged ends back to healthy hair. Where hair has been weakened by heat or chemical work, cutting is often the fastest route back to condition.

Applekosit has been cutting Afro hair for over thirty-five years. That experience shows most in the decisions you do not see: how much to take, where to leave weight, and when to do less.

What it is for

To give your hair a shape that suits your face and your texture, and that grows out well instead of falling apart after a fortnight.

The appointment

How it works, step by step.

What happens when you come in for cutting & shaping at KOSIT Hair Designs.
  1. Shape assessment

We look at your hair dry and in its natural state first, so the cut is planned around real shrinkage and real curl behaviour.

  2. Preparation

Cleansing and sectioning appropriate to your texture and the cut being carried out.

  3. The cut

Cutting worked section by section, checking balance as the shape develops rather than only at the end.

  4. Finish and check

Styled out, then rechecked — because texture reveals unevenness in the finish that it hides when wet.

What you get from it

  • A shape built around your curl pattern and shrinkage
  • Damaged or thinning ends removed so the rest can grow
  • Easier day-to-day styling at home
  • A shape that stays wearable as it grows out

Good to know

  • Arrive with your hair clean and free of heavy product where possible, unless we have agreed otherwise.
  • Keep ends moisturised — a good shape fails first at the ends.
  • Regular light trims protect a cut for far longer than leaving it until the shape has gone.

Questions

Cutting & Shaping: your questions

All frequently asked questions

Will you cut my hair wet or dry?

It depends on the hair and the shape. Textured hair is frequently assessed and cut dry, because that is the only way to see true shrinkage and how the curl sits.

How much length will I lose?

We agree that before starting. Shrinkage means the amount cut and the amount of visible length lost are rarely the same — we will show you on your own hair.

Can you repair a cut from somewhere else?

Usually. Bring it in and we will tell you honestly what can be corrected now and what needs a little growth first.
